The conference organizers seem to have contracted this same aloha spirit of timelessness. Instead of the obligatory six minutes of musical prelude, we are treated to a gorgeous 45 minutes of song and dance from students at Kamehameha High School. Each song lasts seven minutes.

The dancers’ hands convey opuses, yet no one checks their watch. Kennedy takes an enormous amount of abuse from his critics-who have sometimes included me-for his unremitting, agonizing, thinking-ness. His speech here in Hawaii is vintage Kennedy, ranging across history (pit stops at Henry II, Newton, and Blackstone); intellectual theory (Marx, Holmes, and Solzhenitsyn); and-of course-geography.

from Oliver, BC, Canada writes: (((((((The U.S. had better understand that if it wants to provoke Russia, two can play that game.

The Americans didn’t like it when the Soviets used Cuba as a base, and so they should understand that their provocative installation of bases in Russia’s backyard, including the installation of missile detection platforms in the Czech Republic and Poland will not go unanswered.)))))) The devices sound straight from an episode of Dr Who or CSI. But Dr Seracini is one of the leaders of a burgeoning band of historians, scientists, archaeologists and treasure-hunters who deploying the latest hi-tech wizardry in their quest for the missing wonders of the world. Some may never have been more than fables; others certainly existed but have apparently disappeared without trace; all have exerted their own strong fascination. Maury Kravitz, 75, a Chicago attorney and commodities trader, has poured more than $3 million into the as yet fruitless search for Genghis Khan’s tomb in Mongolia, while a team of investors will in 2009 begin excavating what they believe is the Atlantic ocean bed resting place of the San Jose, a Spanish galleon that sank off Colombia in 1708 with a cargo of gold and silver that could now fetch $1 billion.

Rival groups are using new mapping technology and the latest unmanned underwater vehicles to search for the wreckage of the plane of Amelia Earhart, the round-the-world aviator. And the Holy Grail, Noah’s Ark, the Tomb of Nefertiti, the Prussian splendours of Amber Room and the lost civilisation of Atlantis are other targets for intensified hi-tech hunts. Dr Seracini, 60, a pioneer in this ground-breaking world, is director of the recently-established Centre of Interdisciplinary Science for Art, Architecture and Archaeology at the University of California, San Diego.
