On television, Burnett and Korman developed into the perfect pair with their burlesques of classic movies such as “Gone With the Wind” and soap operas like “As the World Turns” (their version was called “As the Stomach Turns”). Another recurring skit featured them as “Ed and Eunice,” a staid married couple who were constantly at odds with the wife’s mother (a young in a gray wig). In “Old Folks at Home,” they were a combative married couple bedeviled by Lawrence as Burnett’s troublesome young sister.

Korman revealed the secret to the long-running show’s success in a 2005 interview: “We were an ensemble, and Carol had the most incredible attitude. I’ve never worked with a star of that magnitude who was willing to give so much away.” Burnett was devastated by Korman’s death, said her assistant, Angie Horejsi. “She loved Harvey very much,” Horejsi said. After 10 successful seasons, Korman left Burnett’s show in 1977 for his own series. took his place, but the chemistry was lacking and the Burnett show was canceled two years later.

What are people doing about it? “I’m surprised TBS or HBO didn’t do a marathon,” Krysta Earp said. The six-season HBO series (1998-2004) has stayed on television in edited reruns on TBS. But Earp and her friends decided to have a marathon of their own. She started preparing for the debut a few weeks ago when she and a few friends had a “Sex-and-the-City”-watching marathon. Kaycie Jones, also of Murfreesboro, said she and some friends will probably have a pre-party before the movie and late-night cocktails afterward.

Are you a Carrie? Whether or not you watched the HBO series, chances are you “know” each of the characters from the show. Maybe you identify with one of the women, or you see some of their characteristics in the people around you. Carrie’s the journalist and narrator of the show, who, in the final episode, reunited with “Big,” the apparent love of her life. Charlotte is the preppy, socialite, who ended the series anticipating the adoption of a baby with her husband. Miranda is a career-driven lawyer who gave up her Manhattan apartment at show’s end to move to Brooklyn with her husband and baby.

Coach Alicia Crawford describes the atmosphere surrounding Whitehouse softball as “exciting,” stemming from the team’s historic progress this season. Perhaps it contrasts the LadyCats’ collective mood following their last two trips to the playoffs. Each time, they experienced “a long bus ride home.” Not all that exciting. This weekend, Whitehouse will be an outing removed from the first postseason win in school history.

The LadyCats (18-6) meet fifth-ranked McKinney Boyd (20-6-2) in a Class 4A best-of-3 area series. Game 1 is scheduled for 7:30 tonight in McKinney. The series will shift to Whitehouse for Game 2 on Saturday (5 p.m.) and, if necessary, Game 3 (30 minutes afterward). “It’s a huge mental relief,” Crawford said of earning a postseason victory, which occurred last week against Lindale, 5-1. “I think it takes a lot of pressure off the girls because I knew they had the talent to get past them. … Whitehouse has had a softball team for over a decade and they have played well in district; it was just a struggle to get that first playoff win.” The postseason blues of recent seasons came via one-run defeats.
