Both men’s styles have been noticed and appreciated around the league. In a survey of NFL head coaches to determine which owner has the best reputation around the league, both Jones and Bowlen scored very high. Coaches, granted anonymity for their candor, were instructed not to vote for their team owners. Bowlen received 4.5 votes and Jones received four votes, trailing only the five votes received by the Dan Rooney family, which founded the Steelers.
Dan Rooney, the chairman of the team, declined to comment for this story. Rooney was at the top of a very crowded list, which lends credence to the notion that the NFL is enjoying a zenith of quality ownership. Eleven of the 32 owners in the league received votes. “It’s a nice compliment to hear your peers feel that way,” Jones said.

There is another side of the Horse Slaughter issue that no one seems to know about. It’s the “KILL PENS” at Shelby, Montana. Average of 2000 plus horses, foals, ponies and mules are kept in holding pens at Shelby, awaiting slaughter in Ft. McCloud, Canada.
I am Sandy Parocai, ranch owner up on the Rocky Mountain Front in Northern Montana. I took a job at the Shelby Kill Pens just to get inside so I could see for myself what goes on. We use horses in our ranching operation and as a former Rodeo Trick-Rider I feel I know enough about horses to look at the Shelby Feed Lot in an honest, over all prospective.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) — Alabama linebacker Jimmy Johns was arrested on felony drug charges Tuesday and kicked off the team, the latest in a string of off-the-field problems for coach Nick Saban’s squad. Johns, who moved to defense for his senior year after playing running back and receiver in 2007, was “pretty wide open” selling cocaine to students on and around the University of Alabama campus but tried to hide what he was doing from teammates, police said.
“He didn’t want them to know he was involved in it,” said Capt. Jeff Snyder of the West Alabama Narcotics Task Force. MORE ON TIDE: Records did not indicate whether Johns had hired a lawyer.

Just in case anybody had forgotten that Kobe Bryant has never won an NBA title without Shaquille O’Neal, the big man sent out a reminder. The Phoenix Suns center can be seen rapping that “Kobe couldn’t do without me” in a video posted online at celebrity news and gossip site TMZ.com During the two-minute video, a grinning O’Neal lurches through an improvised rap in which he skewers the Lakers’ star, with whom he won three straight NBA titles from 2000-2002 while with Los Angeles. “I was freestyling. That’s all. It was all done in fun.
Nothing serious whatsoever,” O’Neal told ESPN.com Monday. “That is what MC’s do. They freestyle when called upon. I’m totally cool with Kobe. No issue at all.

Marvin, Wendy, Wonderdog and the Wonder Twins all drive me nuts. I haven’t and don’t enjoy having them as part of the Super Friends group. I watch the Justice League, Super Friends, Batman, Superman, etc etc.
I enjoy all of the old and all of the new updated versions but Marvin, Wendy, Wonderdog and the Wonder Twins always make me groan. And, I still watch Scooby Doo, the originals and the updated versions. There is a great debate about whether or not Scooby jumped the shark when Scrappy Doo was added. These programs, in one form or another, have been around for a very long time, so older viewers may have differing opinions than younger viewers.

Penury. Why hasn’t Nelson Mandela spoken out against Robert Mugabe? 20 June 2008

By his silence about what is happening in Zimbabwe, Mandela is making himself complicit in the pillage and murder of an entire nation, as well as the strangulation of an important African democracy. I recently had the chance to speak to , the heroic South African attorney who was Mandela’s lawyer in the bad old days and who more recently has also represented Morgan Tsvangirai, the much-persecuted leader of the Zimbabwean opposition. Why, I asked him, was his old comrade apparently toeing the scandalous line taken by President Thabo Mbeki and the African National Congress? Bizos gave me one answer that made me wince-that Mandela is now a very old man-and another that made me wince again: that his doctors have advised him to avoid anything stressful.
One has a bit more respect for the old lion than to imagine that he doesn’t know what’s happening in next-door Zimbabwe or to believe that he doesn’t understand what a huge difference the smallest word from him would make. It will be something of a tragedy if he ends his career on a note of such squalid compromise. As for the revolting spectacle of Mugabe flying in to a Food and Agricultural Organization conference in Rome last week, there were quibbling FAO officials who claimed that the ban on his travel to the European Union did not cover meeting places of U.N. organizations.

A Massachusetts high school is facing a pregnancy boom with 17 girls entering summer vacation expecting babies in what some have called a pregnancy pact. Officials at Gloucester High School in Gloucester, Mass., are investigating whether half of the teens made a pact to get pregnant during the school year, Time.com reported. Officials said that beginning last fall a large group of girls started asking the school clinic for pregnancy tests, the site said.
“Some girls seemed more upset when they weren’t pregnant than when they were,” principal Joseph Sullivan told Time.com. The pregnancy rate at the 1,200-student school is four times higher than the previous year, and officials were shocked to learn that men in their 20s had fathered some of the babies, Time.com said. “We found out one of the fathers is a 24-year-old homeless guy,” Sullivan told Time.com. The Gloucester baby boom is forcing this city of 30,000 to grapple with the question of providing easier access to birth control, something this largely Catholic enclave is slow to embrace, the site said.

GAO sides with Boeing in challenge to $35B tanker contract. 18 June 2008

The competition between Northrop Grumman and Boeing for the huge contract was one of the most hotly-contested in years, and when Northrop Grumman unexpected won on February 29, Boeing almost immediately challenged the Air Force decision. Boeing said the Air Force skewed the competition unfairly. The GAO decision is not binding on the Air Force. But Michael R. Golden, the agency’s managing associate general counsel, said the agency’s recommendations “are followed in almost every case.
” Golden said that if they are not followed, the GAO reports the “non-compliance” to Congress. The Air Force now has 60 days to examine the GAO’s decision and take action. The initial reaction to the ruling suggested that Boeing supporters in Congress would use it as ammunition in seeking to block funding for the deal or force a new competition. The contract for 179 aerial refueling tankers is the first of three deals worth up to $100 billion to replace the Air Force’s entire tanker fleet.
