BEIJING, July 3 (Xinhuanet) — Amid reports linking Alex Rodriguez to Madonna comes news the New York Yankees slugger and his wife have broken up less than three months after the birth of the couple’s second daughter, according to the New York Daily News. Rodriguez refused to address the topic on three occasions Tuesday, once saying “no” when asked if he had any comment. The Daily News reported Wednesday night on its website, citing an anonymous source, that Rodriguez and wife, Cynthia, have separated after having “problems” for about three months. Cynthia Rodriguez’s mother, Evangeline Scurtis, also denied a gossip website report that her daughter had gone on a romantic getaway with rocker Lenny Kravitz to Paris.
“She is not! I know that,” Scurtis told The Daily News. Scurtis repeatedly declined comment when asked about her daughter’s relationship with Rodriguez. The couple was married in November 2002 and has two children, Natasha Alexander and Ella Alexander, who was born April 21.

The conference organizers seem to have contracted this same aloha spirit of timelessness. Instead of the obligatory six minutes of musical prelude, we are treated to a gorgeous 45 minutes of song and dance from students at Kamehameha High School. Each song lasts seven minutes.
The dancers’ hands convey opuses, yet no one checks their watch. Kennedy takes an enormous amount of abuse from his critics-who have sometimes included me-for his unremitting, agonizing, thinking-ness. His speech here in Hawaii is vintage Kennedy, ranging across history (pit stops at Henry II, Newton, and Blackstone); intellectual theory (Marx, Holmes, and Solzhenitsyn); and-of course-geography.

Carlin released a half dozen comedy albums during the ’70s, including the million-record sellers Class Clown, Occupation: Foole (1973) and An Evening With Wally Lando (1975). He was chosen to host the first episode of the late-night comedy show Saturday Night Live in 1975. And two years later, he found the perfect platform for his brand of acerbic, cerebral, sometimes off-color standup humor in the fledgling, less restricted world of cable television. By 1977, when his first HBO comedy special, George Carlin at USC was aired, he was recognized as one of the era’s most influential comedians.
In the years following his 1977 cable debut, Carlin was nominated for a half dozen Grammy awards and received CableAces awards for best stand-up comedy special for George Carlin: Doin’ It Again (1990) and George Carlin: Jammin’ (1992). He also won his second Grammy for the album Jammin’ in 1994. He produced 23 comedy albums, 14 HBO specials, three books, a couple of TV shows and appeared in several movies, from his own comedy specials to Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure in 1989 - a testament to his range from cerebral satire and cultural commentary to downright silliness (and sometimes hitting all points in one stroke). ”Why do they lock gas station bathrooms?” he once mused. ”Are they afraid someone will clean them?” Carlin was born on May 12, 1937, and grew up in the Morningside Heights section of Manhattan, raised by a single mother.

DALLAS (AP) - A farm in Dallas will be transformed this weekend into an 18th century African village as part of the annual Juneteenth observance. Juneteenth commemorates the arrival of Gen. Gordon Granger in Galveston on June 19th, 1865 with news that the Civil War was over and slaves were free.
Called the Sankofa Experience, hundreds will travel to the village to learn about life in Africa and to hear a history that’s been largely untold Organizers plan a slavery re-enactment, complete with “slave traders” who raid the village, crowding people into a replica slave ship.

What an astonishing column by Neal Lawson (The flailed, failed state, June 12). He can find nothing good to say about his own party, yet gives every benefit of the doubt to the Tories. If there turns out to be enough useful idiots on the left to advocate a collaboration strategy with David Cameron, at least the rest of us will know not to wait too long before we hear the next cry of betrayal. Lawson claims poverty has increased under Labour. It has not.
All of the policy effort that has gone into mitigating inequality has barely held it in check. Yet Cameron now claims to be the true champion of progressive causes like poverty and the environment, precisely because he says he knows that it’s not the role of government to act on them. Well, let’s all hope somebody else does. But fairness doesn’t happen by chance.

SAN DIEGO (Reuters) - Ring-rusty Tiger Woods made a stumbling start in the opening round of the U.S. Open, double-bogeying the par-four first hole at Torrey Pines on Thursday.
The American world number one, playing his first tournament since the Masters two months ago, pulled his tee shot into the left rough, punched out on to the fairway and then overshot the green with his approach. After chipping five feet beyond the hole, his uphill bogey putt slid past the right edge of the cup. His playing partners in a high-profile grouping, world number two Phil Mickelson and third-ranked Adam Scott of Australia, both parred the hole after reaching the green in regulation.
