SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - The California Supreme Court overturned a ban on same-sex marriages on Thursday in a major victory for gay rights advocates that will allow homosexual couples to marry in the most populous U.S. state. The court found that California laws limiting marriage to heterosexual couples are at odds with rights guaranteed by the state’s constitution.
Opponents of gay marriage vowed to contest the ruling with a statewide ballot measure. Massachusetts is now the only U.S. state to allow gay marriage. Connecticut, New Hampshire, New Jersey and Vermont permit same-sex civil unions that grant largely the same state rights as married couples but lack the full, federal legal protections of marriage.

Heather Arrick, who went by the name “Heather Stohler” in her professional life, was killed Sunday morning after a fire swept through the upstairs apartment she shared with her boyfriend. Arrick, 29, grew up in Frankton before moving to Florida. She went on to a modeling career that took her to the runways of Europe, got her into photo shoots with Kate Moss for Calvin Klein and landed her on the cover of major fashion magazines.
“I’ve known her since I was 12,” said Travis May, 30, who met Arrick while both were attending Frankton Junior High School. “She was great, very thoughtful. She never forgot the little things, like your birthday.” The Vincennes Fire Department was notified at 8:48 a.m. Sunday of a fire at 604 Broadway St. by another tenant of the building.

The U.S. space agency says it has launched a partnership with the National Institute of Aerospace to produce educational television programs. National Aeronautics and Space Administration Deputy Administrator Shana Dale said the TV programs will be available on NASA Television and the Internet.
The announcement was part of Dale’s keynote address Wednesday in San Jose, Calif., during the NASA Future Forum. Dale said the partnership is designed to engage young people in the excitement and challenges the future holds for America’s space program. Designed for grades K-12 and young adults, the short video snippets will be available on demand through the Internet during the 2008 and 2009 school years. NASA said elementary school-level segments will provide a balanced introduction to the fields of science and engineering and be aligned to national education standards, while middle school-level segments will detail the relevance of math to 21st century careers.

The two candidates squared off in a runoff election for the nonpartisan post after neither secured 50 percent of the vote in a six-person election April 1. Hammons, who will be sworn in next week, said he plans to continue his college education but expects to transfer to a school closer to Muskogee. “Being elected does not change my desire to continue my education,” he said.
“We will schedule our time in an appropriate fashion so that I can be mayor and stay in school.” Hammons replaces Wren Stratton, who decided not to seek re-election after one term. The mayor leads the nine-member city council and serves as a voting member.

David Nanninga grew up in the tiny town of Mineral hearing his grandparents and parents reminisce about their experiences at Mineral High School. But by the time Nanninga was a teenager, the school in Mineral - about 40 miles east of the Quad Cities - had long been closed. He was bused to the nearby town of Annawan and played for a basketball team representing several towns, never getting to wear his hometown Leopards’ jersey. So Nanninga has created a Web site to serve as a tribute to places like his alma mater and other high schools that exist only in the memories of their alumni.
On the Illinois High School Glory Days site, http://www.illinoishsglorydays.com, visitors can browse through entries for more than 900 schools. “These schools are a very important part of Illinois history, and to see them be forgotten would be a shame,” said Nanninga, of Chicago, whose full-time job is as an Illinois State Police lieutenant. Nanninga, 46, created the site more than three years ago.
